Review of the Petzl Tikkina HeadlampThe best time to start building your bug out bag is when you are just a few hours away from bad weather and a power outage. Actually no, that’s not the best time to start putting together your bug out bag. However, that’s what we did for my mom and girlfriend on the weekend of Hurricane Irma.

We were in Georgia for an “escape from Hurricane Irma vacation”. I of course brought my bug out bag, like I always do. They brought nothing.

[Learn how to build the ultimate bug out bag.]

As we watched the news, we saw that the storm would be sending some bad weather our way. That’s when my mom and girlfriend suddenly became interested in learning about putting together a bug out bag just like the one I had. So we got in the car and went to one of the local outdoor supply stores.

Of the many things we shopped for, a source of light for moving around a campsite at night, hiking in the dark or looking to see if a Chupacabra might be nearby was on the list. So we picked up two Petzl Tikkina headlamps.

Headlamps are better than the standard flashlight because not only do you look extremely cool wearing a flashlight on your forehead, but a headlamp frees up both hands to complete tasks such as batoning wood, building fires, setting up shelters and wrestling bears (no not really).

I own many flashlights and a couple of headlamps, one being an older Petzl. So I figured the Petzl Tikkina would be as nice and as well-made as my Petzl–and well, it was actually nicer. Below are some details about the light’s features.

About the Petzl Tikkina Headlamp

  • Is water-resistant.
  • Has three light settings including a wide-beam setting. (Very bright!)
  • Runs on three AAA batteries.
  • Is compatible with the CORE rechargeable battery.

Our power was out for roughly 12 hours in a cabin in the woods. It was pitch black at night but these headlamps allowed us to stay inside out of the weather, build a fire and cook dinner. So yeah, if you are building your bug out bag or looking to upgrade your light, go with a Petzl.
